Parent's role

Now let us talk the role of the parents. Recently a dejected person narrated an incident that disturbed him greatly. At the age of 29, he searched for a school-day friend and finally was able to find him but in a bleak condition. His friend was 29 years old but had stopped mental growth at the age of 15. When enquired about this catastrophe, he got the following story about him.

The young boy was in a very good school up to class 2. Let us name him as John. He was the topper in his classes and scored very high percentage up to class 2. But somehow, he faced a set back during the last few months of class 2. His father was annoyed with him and changed school. The change in the environment had an effect on him and was doing better in the beginning but he could not maintain the rank that his father expected him to get. At that time the narrator had to go away from that place due to his parent’s transfer. This took place when both were in class 5. He lost touch with John but could not forget this childhood friendship as John was a very bright and pleasant friend then.

There came the fateful period of John’s life when his rank and mark dropped down. The father became more and more desperate and changed schools after schools and finally landed in a government school. What happened next was unexplainable. John stopped growing mentally and became a couch potato. Doctors and medicines could not undo what John’s father had done to him.

Now John is fit only to be exhibited as a sample what an unrelenting father can do to his child.

Perhaps nothing can be done to John and his father at this stage. But this gives us an opportunity to prod into some of our good old traditional myths and put forth the following questions.

  • When will this hype and myth about high percentage and rank die?
  • When will the real meaning of education reach the mass?
  • When will we realize the merit of education propagated by researchers, educationists and experts in the field?
  • When will the race for marks, percentage and rank stop?
  • When will the craze for success in terms of earning reduce?
  • When will the elders maintain patience and tolerance in the case of young minds?
  • When will my dream of making a positive impact on the people come true?
  • We must put a full stop to all such menaces in the society. Let us not think that is the problem of John’s father and mother. Let us take a step towards reality. The movies like “Dhoni”, “Pasanga”, “Sattai”, “Tare Zameen par”, “Nanban” et all have in no mean terms highlighted this very concept. Yet we are to travel ‘miles to go before we sleep”.
